SAPOA joins forces with lawyers to protect property rights.

The South African Property Owner's Association (SAPOA) legal committee has joined forces with the Association of Property Lawyers to form a new legal committee. This committee will serve to evaluate, discuss and respond to pending and existing policy and legislation that may affect the property sector.

SAPOA CEO Neil Gopal says, "SAPOA's 15-strong Legal Committee ably demonstrates a good representation of some of the leading legal professionals in South Africa who are employed by some of our members.  This grouping will no doubt serve the property rights and interests of the many thousands of members we represent."

The Committee's focus on bills, acts and policies will ensure quality recommendations in the face of changing legislation; thereby strengthening SAPOA members' property rights.   Chairman of the Legal Committee Isabella de Lange says, "The Companies Bill, Consumer Protection Bill and the Land Use Management Bill are but three examples already on the committee's agenda." The Committee will also serve to build and maintain good liaison with SAPOA members and members of the legal fraternity, and will examine any other matters referred by SAPOA and SAPOA members.

Following each policy, bill or act under discussion, the Committee will provide a report detailing its recommendations, and this will be circulated to both board and individual members.

According to Tsakane Shilubane, Legal Services Manager for SAPOA, the Legal Committee will convene regularly -  with a minimum of five times per year. In addition, where urgent matters arise, the committee will meet to discuss these.
