Dodgy property deals - Joost lied

Disgraced rugby star admits lying, after fingering property players to hide sex-drugs dalliance.

Joost van der Westhuizen, once the golden boy of South African rugby, has admitted lying to cover up a sex-and-drugs dalliance with an "unbelievably sexy" dancer while his wife, Amor, was pregnant with their second child.

Van der Westhuizen has spent much time and money trying to persuade South Africans that the media has been fed lies about him being the man in a sex video released earlier this year.

He hired private investigators who helped him put out a story that a business enemy had gone to great lengths to produce a video with a look-a-like of him in it. Van der Westhuizen even claimed that the penis in the video was bigger than his, as way of evidence that he'd been framed. (Read Joost, the sex tapes and the property conspiracy for more on this).

Joost's theory was this:  perhaps a property transaction gone wrong has something to do with it all. He has had several irons in the fire and has been active in the property market.

Realestateweb readers are familiar with some of these property dealings.

Earlier this year, we reported on how Joost and other sports celebrities - Ernie Els and Victor Matfield - had been enlisted to help convince the nation it takes brains to invest in a certain property development (Read Rugby, rocket scientists and property developers).

Then Realestateweb.co.za - part of the Moneyweb group - reported on how that same developer had dropped Joost from the marketing team after his involvement in Progressive Investment Holdings (PIH) - a company blamed for losing investors' money - emerged in the business pages.

Joost was livid about losing the deal, and told Realestateweb he had been "used" by shrewd business operators and the public misled about his involvement in PIH (read "I was used" - Joost).

Sinister stories emerged about Joost, too, including a bizarre blackmail and shooting incident (read Joost van der Westhuizen blows it for more about the blackmailer, Joost and the pistol-whipping).

This Sunday, it has emerged that Van der Westhuizen has given up trying to pretend it was not him in the holey pink underpants on the sex video bought by Heat magazine. He has been lying, repeatedly, to the media.

The Sunday Times reports on Joost's admission about his Night of Shame, saying the ageing rugby hero has come clean about his infidelity in his new book, called Joost: The Man in the Mirror.

"Against all my principles, I had a sexual liaison - we never had intercourse - with a woman who was not my wife. And we took drugs," Joost is quoted as saying.

In the book Van der Westhuizen apparently describes how he had met a bunch of girls, one of whom was "unbelievably sexy, and keen, and available".

And she also "keeps letting you know that she thinks you are literally God's gift to women". "Lastly, you have a pregnant wife and a young son at home. Let me ask you Dave - what would you have done?" Van der Westhuizen reportedly asks his biographer, David Gemmell.

At the time of the incident his wife, performer Amor Vittone, was expecting the couple's second child, Kylie.

Although he admits the dalliance, Van der Westhuizen does not go into detail on where they met or what he and Marlize van Emmenis got up to. He had had no idea that she had taped their liaison, said the paper.

After initially denying it was him in the video, the 38-year-old eventually confessed to Vittone in July and, finally, in the book he reveals how the indiscretion almost cost him his marriage as well as his life, said the Sunday Times.

Van der Westhuizen "recalls the day the sex tape story hit the headlines. ‘It was a horrible, horrible day. I can't describe how awful it was. I tried to get hold of the paper's lawyers to see if I could watch (the video), but because it was Sunday we couldn't get anything arranged.'"

It has been "tough" on their marriage, but he insists they will still be together this Christmas. "For two months we've been working on it and there's a definite improvement. We've never slept in separate bedrooms ... Things are tough," he told the Sunday Times.

"Amor is scared (about the release of the book) and we don't know what's going to happen. This thing is going to open up again, and I'm going to put my family through it again. More than anything, I fear losing my family. Everything else can go, but not my family. I may still lose them; I hope and pray that I don't and that Amor can find it in her heart to forgive me."

Other nuggets of information shared about Van der Westhuizen and Amor this Sunday include how their first date ended with the lovely singer taking a dump on the side of the road following a romantic Valentine dinner.

"Afterwards, as he was driving Vittone's BMW home, she developed stomach pains. Before he could even suggest they go to a pharmacy or doctor, she ordered him to stop. Joost pulled over and braked at the same time. Before he could do anything, Amor had released her seatbelt, opened the door, jumped out and, pulling down her panties, squatted next to the vehicle. In that excruciatingly embarrassing moment, courtesy of a bad oyster, the universe dropped out of Amor's bottom," the book apparently recounts."

First-time parents also get tips on how to wind babies effectively: apparently by handling them like rugby balls. Joost, we are told, explains of his son, Jordan: "I would hold him face down in the palm of my hand and then put my other hand on him quickly, as though I was going to pass him, and he would just suddenly burp.".

You can also hear about how Van der Westhuizen is unrepentant after damaging a boom in a rush to get rugby boots to his son. Police wanted to arrest him for trespassing and breaking the boom.

Less accepting of Van der Westhuizen's demeanours, meanwhile, is Supersport. Sapa reports that the show has axed Van der Westhuizen as a presenter over his admission that he starred in a sex video which showed him snorting drugs. "SuperSport has perused extracts from Joost van der Westhuizen's biography... and held discussions with him," it said in a statement on Sunday.

"Following those discussions, SuperSport and Joost have mutually agreed to terminate the freelance agreement between them, forthwith," said Supersport International spokesman Clinton van der Berg.

Stop blame shifting
As a long term investor of PIH, I can verify that the directors were not shady, and gave Joost an opportunity of a lifetime. He must stop blaming his failures on others. His involvement in PIH had nothing to do with his exclusion in property deals, but . .more

Fingers in the pie
"Disgraced rugby star admits lying, after fingering property players ...." Joost did not have sex with the stripper because he was busy fingering property players. Maybe he did the same to rugby players. That may be the reason they liked him so much!!!

I'm sorry, but....
A genuine apology does not end with I'm sorry but .... I was used.... lied to ... etc... as that is simply not an apology but an excuse. Joost was showered with opportunities by all his business partners and should not blame them for his failures!
